I have personal experience with AccesSurf: I was on one of there boards on a tandem surf for one of the Day at the Beach events. The beach was packed with volunteers and people with all sorts and levels of disabilities waiting for their opportunity to “catch a wave!” It was amazing! The AccesSurf calendar is always full, so here is the link to their calendar: https://www.accessurf.org/events/

Mission

AccesSurf provides life-changing accessible water programs for people with disabilities.

AccesSurf Hawai’i was born of humble beginnings: a few pickup trucks, lots of duct tape and a determination to provide access for all people with disabilities to the beach and ocean. Our current programs consist of:

  • Day at the Beach
  • Wounded Warrior Day at the Beach
  • Adaptive swim and surf clinics
  • Adaptive outrigger canoe program
  • Multi day adaptive surf camps
  • Hawai’i Adaptive Surfing Championships
  • Corporate retreat community engagement programs
  • Special partner events with schools and organizations

Today AccesSurf has a robust community in Hawai’i and around the world. Locally providing over 90 program days with over 4000 life changing experiences annually.

From website: Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Philosophy

Special Olympics is founded on the belief that children and adults with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Special Olympics believes that through sports training and competition, Health, Education, and Leadership programs, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually on and off the playing fields. Families are strengthened and communities are inspired, creating an inclusive environment of equality, respect, and acceptance across Hawaiʻi. The ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs.

Resource for Service Dogs

From the website: Our organization’s history is one of dedication, passion, and community. Over the
years, we have grown from a small initiative to a recognized and accredited
training center. Our unique approach involves volunteer puppy raisers who
socialize and tailor training programs to meet the individual needs of the recipient.

We have no formal training facilities; instead, our dogs-in-training live in the homes of our loyal and committed band of puppy raisers. By training in public settings, our puppies learn to ignore distractions—preparation for focusing on their future handler.

We are a grassroots 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and the only Certified Training Center on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

Our Mission

Hawaii Fi-Do Service Dogs helps to build independence and quality of life for children
and adults with disabilities in Hawaii by providing them with quality trained assistance dogs and by sharing awareness of service dogs to the community.
